Deco Dance – Fabrics and Kits

Deco Dance by Fabric Freedom is one of the most unique and interesting fabric collections we’ve seen in a long time!  And Sally’s new quilt design for these fabrics really accentuates those qualities by presenting them in a unique quilt design, which we’ve now kitted.

Deco Dance Large Print - Red/Orange

Deco Dance Large Print - Red/Orange

Deco Dance is a new line from our talented friends at FF. The fabrics are inspired and based on the works of Clarice Cliff, one of the most prolific and talented ceramic designers of the art deco period.

Inspired by well-known Cliff landscape designs, the line is presented in two colorways, a blue with yellow accents, and a red/orange grouping.  All of the fabrics have outline tracings of gold metallic around the designs, giving the fabrics that extra sheen and sparkle.  Each of the colorways consists of 6 new all-over designs complemented by a panel and a tonal stripe fabric.

The panel contains five different designs in 6-inch squares running in rows of 5 designs across the width of fabric. Ample borders for fussy cutting are provided. Our panel offerings contain two rows.

As usual with FF fabrics, the highest quality yard goods, printing and finishing were used, making for an excellent hand and great workability.  Make sure you look through the enlarged pictures for the individual fabrics, and the quilts on our website to see the true beauty of these fabrics.

We’re offering these as individual yardage and, as usual, in our popular special collections consisting of a panel and a half-yard of each coordinate.  Sample packs are also available.  Click Here to Shop for Deco Dance Fabrics, Collections, and Kits.

Deco Dance Kits

To go along with these fantastic fabrics, Sally Ablett has designed a quilt in

Deco Dance Quilt - Blue

wall hanging or small throw size that really shows off and accentuates the design elements of the fabrics.  These quilts are 49 inches square, and each uses all 5 of the “plate” designs in a unique layout. The angled layout ties together with the tonal stripe borders to make a design that has a lot of visual interest.  Several Fabric Freedom New Reflections blenders are used in each quilt as well. Reflections is a blender that has been printed using a dozen separate screens, so there is a lot of variation in the tones in these prints, lending further visual interest. Rather than a stark black for separation of the blocks, the mottled black reflections softens the look. The black Reflections is also used for the quilt bindings.

Deco Dance Quilt - Red

We’re offering this quilt kit in both the colorways, and as usual, our kit contains all the fabrics necessary for the top and bindings, plus Sally’s pattern and our helpful fabric cross-reference.  Click Here to Shop for Deco Dance fabrics, collections, and kits.

These quilts and fabrics are fresh and unique, and will bring a great spring feeling to your home.  Get some!

Our Trip Up North Last Week…

Last weekend we took our twice-annual trip up north to attend our favorite buyer’s market in Portland Oregon, do a couple of classes, buy lots of fabrics, and then after the show, head up to Seattle for a short visit with our daughter, son-in-law and new grandson.

We had a great trip although it was exhausting.  We’re talking about maybe flying up next time to cut down a bit on the time we need to be away from here.  Thanks to all our customers who waited an extra day or two to get their orders shipped!  We know you won’t be disappointed in the new lines we saw and ordered for summer and fall delivery.

This is going to be a long post, so here we go…

We arrived in Portland on Thursday afternoon, checked into the Marriott Courtyard downtown, then had a nice dinner and visit with Cindy’s sister and brother-in-law who live across the river in Vancouver Washington.  After dropping them off at home and visiting a little more while being repeatedly molested by their two hyper-active Jack Russell terriers, we headed back to the hotel and settled in.  The beds were real comfortable, the room was nice, large and clean, the shower worked really well and the staff was really nice and helpful. About all you can ask for in a good hotel.

Friday morning we got up early and drove a few miles over to the Crowne Plaza hotel where all the classes were going to be held.  We got there plenty early, so after breakfast we unloaded Cindy’s sewing machine and other paraphernalia, and went to the ballroom areas to find her classes.

While Cindy was getting set up for her class, I went next door to another room

Shelly Figueroa

Shelly Figueroa

where Shelly Figueroa was preparing to teach a class on making clothing for little kids.  We’ve recently started selling Shelly’s patterns, and have made a kit out of her Mary Go Round dress pattern using Maywood’s Dab of Jazz fabrics. (picture at right)  We love this little reversible dress, and it’s been pretty popular on our website. We had a really nice chat with Shelly, and got to see a couple of her new patterns. Look for a new girl’s jumper kit using her pattern really soon on our website. We’ll also be introducing a couple of her other patterns in the web store in the next week or so, including a neat pattern for a boy’s hoodie and beach short combo.  Thanks for taking time out of your busy pre-class prep time to visit with us, Shelly!

Back in the other classroom, I got to meet Helene Knott, who designs the fantastic little vegetable-cat block patterns we recently put up on the pattern section of our web store.  Helene is another great designer, and Cindy was taking a class on making her “Yammy Cat” block.  Cindy’s going to write about her classes and experiences on Friday, so we’ll leave that for her post.

After Cindy got settled in, I jumped on the shuttle bus out to the warehouse to start shopping and meeting with our reps.  Friday is the day to pick up extra in-stock and current merchandise at the show, and Saturday is the day to see all the new upcoming products.  I spent a few hours wandering around the warehouse, talking with our rep, picking up things on our shopping list that we’d take home with us and avoid paying shipping charges on.

We got some extra supplies of patterns, like the entire 12-pattern Garden Patch Cats series by Helene Knott, a couple of other new patterns, restocked on a few fabrics we were short on.  I also picked up a couple of new Daiwabo Taupe designs to expand our line a bit and a few new patterns that would work well with them.  We also now have access to the entire line of beautiful Fabric Freedom soft fair-trade India hand-dyes, so we picked up 6 new shades of those, mostly in purples and blues to round out our selection.

I also spent some time looking at the new Serenity Daiwabo Taupes that are coming out this spring.  They are gorgeous!  So nice in fact that we’ve ordered all 33 of the new designs.  When they arrive, this will bring our selection of these wonderful Japanese prints to over 65. Those of you who love the Daiwabos are not going to be disappointed in the new designs, they just keep getting prettier every year while continuing to blend nicely with the older prints.

Cindy relaxes after an intense day of sewing

Cindy relaxes after an intense day of sewing

Well, at the end of the day I headed back over to where Cindy’s second class was just finishing up, and popped in to see what was happening. She was making great progress on a very complicated table runner that she started in her second class, also given by Helene.  I sat in the hotel lobby and used their wireless connection to catch up on emails and check orders while Cindy finished up.  When she was ready, we headed back to our hotel to relax a bit, then had a nice dinner downstairs in the hotel’s bistro.  It was a nice restaurant on the street and it was fun watching the trollies roll by while we ate. It’s been awhile since we spent time in any central city, and it was kind of a fun change.

Saturday, we headed out to the warehouse and got started early looking at

Cindy with Jeremy of Avlyn

Cindy with Jeremy of Avlyn

fabrics for future sales in our web store. Our first stop was with Jeremy Jeffries, VP of Avlyn fabrics. We’ve heard a lot of good things about Avlyn, and wanted to look at their new lines, in particular some of their new batiks and hand-dyes.

We had a great time talking with Jeremy.  He is super-knowledgeable about fabric manufacturing and fabric dying and gave us a great refresher course on those subjects while we were talking and looking.   Avlyn has really high-quality fabrics, which is all that we’re buying these days. We’ve gotten a couple of lines in the past that were lower quality fabrics and we can really tell the difference, so if it isn’t the best, it isn’t showing up in our store, no more! I want to get a recap of our conversation on fabric differences, dyes and quality and as soon as I do, I’ll publish a post just on that subject, because it’s information everyone who uses fabrics should have.

Anyway, we bought a couple of new batik lines from Avlyn, including Karen Combs’ not yet released beautiful and unique new versions of her gradient-dyed batiks, which are in brighter colors than the first set. We have some kit ideas using these and some wonderful new designs by Karen. We are also going to be doing a fabulous new southwestern batik quilt kit, shown behind Cindy and Jeremy in the picture, and we also picked up a couple of cute new novelty fabrics from Avlyn. We’re really looking forward to our new relationship with Avlyn!

At that point we hooked up with our rep Lynn Kraus, who is also one of our favorite pattern designers, and headed over to look at some new fabrics from another new-to-us supplier, Elizabeth’s Studio fabrics.  We had a great time looking through their new offerings and selecting a few for our store.  We had previously ordered a new Russian-influenced line from ES and are anxiously awaiting it’s arrival. This is a beautiful line on black backgrounds with metallic bright colors and will be a unique addition. We also have several fabric sets coming from Elizabeth that are really amusing, so stay tuned!

Cindy and Don surround the Taphouses

Cindy and Don surround the Taphouses

Then, it was off to meet with our favorite supplier, Bryan Taphouse, owner of Fabric Freedom of London. We’re one of Bryan’s largest USA retailers, and it’s always fun to see what he and his designers have cooked up for the next season.  We’re always amazed by the quality and new designs they come up with as well as the new variations on older designs.  This time was no exception. We saw some things that just knocked our socks off, including a sequel to a new line that we haven’t even gotten in yet but is expected soon. Fabric Freedom is also doing another classy William Morris line this summer as well as a couple of new lines in shades of single colors, all of which, of course, we ordered.

This spring, Bryan brought with him his lovely wife Jackie, combining a little fun family vacation with the business trip.  We had a great time chatting, and we wish them the best on their remaining travels in the USA this spring!

After looking at, and ordering most of the new lines from Fabric Freedom, we spent some more time making final purchases and topping up our cart with a few more patterns and books, then it was time to say goodbye to our friends in Portland, check out, load up the car and hit the road for Seattle.

A few hours later, we arrived at our daughter’s house outside Seattle, just about in time for dinner.  After a nice dinner we settled in for a great visit with the family and especially our little six-month-old grandson. He’s getting so cute!  And he’s almost ready to start crawling.

Sunday morning, after breakfast and another visit, we rolled for home, heading down the east side of the mountains, Arriving home on Monday afternoon, we spent the evening Monday and all day Tuesday cutting and packing out all the orders that had stacked up during our absence. We got everything out in Tuesday’s mail,  though I don’t think our postmaster appreciated me arriving at his window 20 minutes before closing with that many packages to process.

Anyway, it was a good trip, we had a great time and selected a lot of really nice super-high quality goods for our store.  Thanks again for your patience to those people who had to wait a day or two extra to get their orders. We promise not to do it again until next fall!

New Poppy and Poppy Spot from Fabric Freedom

Do you like red?  Cindy does, and wow is this new line ever red!  Poppy and poppy spot are two new integrated lines from Fabric Freedom.

Poppy and Poppy Spot - Black

Poppy and Poppy Spot - Black

A couple of years ago, FF did a Poppies line and it was really popular, but this one is an entirely new twist on that concept.  All new bold red and black florals with dark green stems, in large, medium and small, are complemented by several spot fabrics in several variations, and two wavy line fabrics.

Poppy is in two basic colorways, each containing five fabrics. The two red on red medium prints  will be included in both half-yard packs as it is in both colorways.

The main difference in the two colorways is the backgrounds, either black or white. From Poppy spot we have two wavy fabrics, one featuring red and black, the other red, black and white stripes. We have the spot fabrics in two sizes, medium spots red on black and black on red, and small spots red on black and white on black.  Whew!  As usual, these are great, highest quality quilters cotton fabrics featuring Fabric Freedom’s unique hand-painted originals, soft hand and great finish.

We have made up two half-yard collections from Poppy and Poppy Spot. Each contains 8 fabrics. Both of the collections share the two medium red-on-red fabrics, with one of the collections having all the fabrics with the black backgrounds and the other with the white backgrounds.  If you’d like to mix and match, just let us know and we can do substitutions.

Poppy and Poppy Spot - White

Poppy and Poppy Spot - White

Also, remember that, as always, if you add yardage to any or all of the fabrics in our half-yard collections, we’ll cut them continuous unless you specify separate cuts.

We also have a new kit coming out with these fabrics in the next week or so, so stay tuned.

If you like red like we like red, this is the fabric line for you!

Folklorica by In The Beginning

Folklorica Panel

Folklorica Panel

Another new fabric line went up on our website today.  Folklorica, from In The Beginning fabrics, could be described best by the words fun and whimsical, in our opinion.  Oh yeah, and beautiful and funky too.

This brand new line designed by Julie Praschkin combines a fun panel with a large repeat stripe and a bunch of large, medium and small-print blenders, all in bold primary colors that really catch the eye.

Speaking of eye-catching, these prints could be used in almost any combination, to create really lavish and fun quilts. Try these out on your quilting guild! Watch out for the crowds gathering around though!

We are planning on a couple of different kit projects using these fabrics, unfortunately we’re still waiting for a couple of the blenders to complete the necessaries for the kits.  They should be here soon, but you never know with suppliers.  At least we hope they will.  Meanwhile, we’re sure you can figure out something original to do with these fun, funky, and whimsical fabrics.

By the way, make sure you check the product description on the panel and on the big focus stripe for the repeats and sizes.  Click Here to see Folklorica on our web store.

Sweet 16’s and Daiwabo Serenity Fat Quarters

I always thought a Sweet 16 was a party young girls’ parent’s threw for them, sort of a societal “coming out” party.  Turns out there’s another meaning to the term.

Maywood Poinsetta - Traditional Sweet 16s

Maywood Poinsetta - Traditional Sweet 16's

Maywood Studios has a cut called a “Sweet 16,”  and just as you might expect, it’s a 16th of a yard.  Basically, it’s a fat quarter cut in quarters.  So, if you take a standard fat quarter, which is 18 x 22 inches, and cut it in quarters, you get 4 pieces each 9 inches by 11 inches.  That’s the size of the Sweet 16!  Kind of like a great big oversized charm square, someone said.  Or maybe an squashed 10 inch square?

Anyway, Maywood has lots of free patterns for these cuts on their website, just Click Here and look for Sweet Sixteen patterns.

We’ve just put several selections of Maywood Sweet 16’s on our website. Two are for the Holidays and are from different Poinsetta lines.  The Vintage Poinsettas are more muted, antique looking fabrics, while the Traditional Poinsetta is the well, traditional brightly-colored flowers. Each are small, very affordable packs. Great stash builders as well, you may work these in with other Christmas fabrics for an accent in a larger project. Check these out by Clicking Here.

Our other new Sweet 16 offering is a large roll, 49 pieces of Daiwabo Taupes. These beautiful fabrics were described in an earlier post, so I’ll not go into the beauties of them here. These beautiful taupe collections are fantastic, and a Sweet 16 collection is a way to look at and have a choice of a lot of them without a huge expenditure.  Over the next few days, we’ll be putting a lot of new patterns on the website that are designed for and work beautifully with the Daiwabos.  Stay tuned!

If you love Daiwabo Taupes, and everyone who sees and handles them seems to, here’s your chance to have one

Daiwabo Taupes FQ Collection

Daiwabo Taupes FQ Collection

of the big, limited edition fat quarter bundles of these fantastic fabrics.  Periodically, Maywood bundles up a bunch of these and lets us buy them for resale.  They are pretty rare, and they don’t make a lot of them. Suffice it to say that getting your hands on one of these collector edition fat quarter collections would be a thrill.  We only have one of each collection. Collection 7 contains 49 fat quarters, and Collection 8 contains 37 fat quarters. If you hurry, you might get one! Here’s a link to our Fat Quarters section, you can see them there.

New Batiks!

We just put over 30 new Hoffman-California Bali Handpaint batiks on our website and

G2189-185 Abalone

G2189-185 Abalone

also added another four Hoffman 1895 Bali Watercolors to our collection.  The new Handpaints are all-new for this fall, new patterns and colors.

In doing our selections for these fall additions to our lineup, we focused on balancing our offerings with more light colors, so many of the new fabrics are in those ranges. As usual, the Hoffman batiks are the best of the best of Bali craftsmanship and quality. We also have quite a few of the patterns and colors that are in the new flavors of the Balipops, and we’ll be trying to put those as related products in the next day or so.

So, check out our new and even larger selection of batiks!

Aboriginal Designs from M&S Australia

We saw a little ad in one of the supplier magazines for a new importer of these fabrics, and were really intrigued by the fascinating look of these Australian Aborigine-designs.

Aboriginal Designs from Australia

Aboriginal Designs from Australia

We finally arranged to see the fabrics in person, and were swept away by how unique and beautiful they were, so we just had to get some of them for our store. We tried to select fabrics that would work well together, out of the many available, and decided to start with five fabrics.  We ordered some, then had to wait for months and months to get them from Australia.  But now they’re here, and they’re even more beautiful than we remembered!

Each of the ones we have are designed by a different designer, but they all use the same dye lots, so you can be sure they’ll work together in your projects.

These fabrics are all printed on 100% cotton easy-care washable fabric, and are top quality like all the stuff we carry. The feel and finish is fantastic, and the designs are gorgeous.  The aboriginal designs use a lot of traditional symbolism, and the primary design tool is the dot, although there are a lot of other elements in the designs, such as frogs, lizards and native plants.

These are fantastic fabrics, and you owe it to yourself to try some.  As usual, they’ll be available in fats, half yards, and our popular sample packs.

Benartex True Blue by Eleanor Burns

Our Eleanor Burns True Blue fabric line by Benartex is now completely up on our website.  We were waiting on two of the blue fabrics, which had been ordered but delayed in cutting by Benartex.  The two that we needed, and now have are the Dolly Garden Royal and the Wildflowers Royal.  With these two prints our collection is complete and we’ll be putting a kit out soon.  Meanwhile, you have a really nice selection of the True Blue to consider.  We’ve also increased our half-yard and fat quarter collections to include the two new fabrics, there are now 16 in the collection.  Remember, a sample pack with rebate coupon is available for all our fabric lines, including True Blue!  These are really beautiful fabrics, in the usual Benartex top quality.  Check them out on our website by clicking here.

Summer of Love by Fabric Freedom

Summer of Love by Fabric Freedom

Summer of Love by Fabric Freedom

When I first saw this fabric on paper, I really didn’t like it.  Cindy sort of liked it.  Then we saw it in the real samples and she liked it a lot, and I liked it a lot better.  Summer of love is reminiscent of the late sixties, when we were young, and love, and a lot of other things, filled the air.  This line takes you back to the summer of ‘68, when paisley and wild prints were all the rage.  The line comes in several colorways. We selected the black/red/white because we thought those primary colors best exemplify the period, and they’re just plain neat looking!  Great feel, color rendition and sewability, the highest quality as usual for Fabric Freedom.

So, get some of this fabric, put on some old Jimi Hendrix, Janis Joplin, or “The Band” records, and sew yourself up a little “love” quilt.

This fabric will make you smile like it does us.  Watch out for the groovy stripes though, if you look at it long enough you’ll feel like you’re a little stoned.  But maybe that’s a good thing.   :-)

Check it all out on our website by clicking here.
