Cindy’s New Jungle Buddies Quilt

Cindy’s been working on a new quilt for our little grandson who’s turning 1 year old this weekend. It’s her first quilt using her new Viking Megaquilter machine.

Cindy and our oldest son are driving up to Seattle for the birthday party, so she’s been rushing to get this done, staying up nights for the last few days. I get to stay home and take care of our two dogs, my son’s dog, and her horses, and of course, the store.

The quilt is 60″ x 72″ approximately, and uses Blank Quilting’s Jungle Buddies fabric by Heidi Pridemore. The orange, brown and blue accent fabrics are from Blank’s Simply Delicious line, and the pattern is a free pattern from Blank for this fabric line. I believe the pattern is also by Heidi Pridemore.

Cindy had to rush off to Carson City this afternoon to get some last minute things for her trip. She finished the FMQ’ing and got the bindings serged on this morning. She’ll hand-finish the bindings in the car while the son drives, tomorrow. I had to lay out the quilt and take some pictures with it unfinished, because they’re leaving in the dark tomorrow morning. Hopefully she can take a finished picture of it when she gets to Seattle.

Meanwhile, I think it’s really cute, even if it’s not totally finished yet!

This quilt is available in our webstore as a kit and all the fabrics are also available if you want to design your own.  Click Here to go to the product listing.

More Daiwabos Coming!

Our Customers Love Daiwabos!!!    And We Love them Too!!!  Just ask Marilyn!  We’re featuring a couple of her quilts in this post, more about them later.

Marilyns Daiwabo Quilt

Marilyn's Daiwabo Quilt

So, since we already have a large selection of Daiwabos, we decided to become the “Go-To” place for Serenity Daiwabo Taupes on the Interweb.   We currently have 68 or 69 print/color combinations in stock, and we’ve just ordered 45 more.  This will give our Daiwabo fans over 110 different fabrics to choose from, including pretty much every Daiwabo basic print and color, all the ombres. We’re also expecting our new 2010 fat quarter collections real soon, as well.

This will give you the ability to create to your hearts content, while not being limited by color or print, and not having to shop around to multiple stores to get the prints and colors you want.  We’ll have it all right here for you!

Well, I can feel that some of you are saying: “What the heck is a Daiwabo?”  The answer is, only the finest Japanese silk screens, in fantastic colors, some more muted and some brighter, on the highest quality quilter’s cotton.  These are all made by Daiwabo in Japan under contract to EESCO, owners of Maywood fabrics and Cara Collection, and the line name on these is Cara Collection Serenity.

These prints are the true Japanese aesthetic, extremely elegant prints and blenders, and each one has multiple shades so that you can literally mix and match at will across the entire line, old or new prints notwithstanding.  We really love them! Can you tell?  :-)

As an example of what you can do with them,  our friend Marilyn H. from

Marilyns Hubbys Quilt

Marilyn's Hubby's Daiwabo Quilt

Oklahoma, USA sent us some pictures of her latest Daiwabo creations.  The first is a quilt she made for herself, and the second, a more masculine quilt she made for her hubby.  Each of these quilts were made with just 3 or 4 Daiwabo prints.  In the first quilt, she used a leaf print in three different colors.  And in the second, she used  a beautiful fan-feather print in several colors.  These two quilts were both backed with one of the prints from the tops.

And we think they’re both fabulous!  Nice Work, Marilyn!

Kotyk with Poppies

Kotyk with Poppies

Tania sent us this picture today, and we just had to share it with you.  She bought a large print from Fabric Freedom’s “Poppy” line from us, and used it to make some lovely pillows.  Apparently, her cute kitty named Kotyk really likes this fabric too, because it looks like he grabbed the leftovers to cuddle on.

Really cute cat, and lovely pillows Tania!  Thanks so much for sharing them with us!  Sweet dreams, indeed!  :)

Anna’s Cat Quilt

Anna's Cat Quilt

Anna's Cat Quilt

Our friend Anna from snowy cold Chicagoland sent us pictures of her latest creation, this really cute “big cat” quilt.  Covering a queen bed top, the quilt features several diagonal strip panels, two main “cat” panels, and a large border of leopard spots.  The main panel fabrics are by Alexander Henry and feature jungle animals in black and white.

This is a really striking quilt, and a really nice design.   Nicely done, Anna!

Marie’s Bargello Heart Quilt

Our friend Marie stopped over yesterday to show us the new project she’s been working on, a really pretty Bargello Heart quilt she’s making for her granddaughter, who is expected to arrive soon.

She also wanted to get a couple of opinions on borders and binding  for it.  Her quilt has a

lot of really cute fabrics in it from Blanks’ Pixie Patch and Jitterbugz lines, a batik or two from Hoffman, a big violet daisy from Fabric Freedom’s Rainbow Garden line, and some additional Blank blenders.

This was my first time seeing one of these quilts, and I’m amazed at how many little pieces there are in one.  I asked Marie how it was made, but I got lost in very short order listening to the explanation. It’s probably too complicated for this feeble brain.

We think Marie is going to add a thin blue inner border, a wider border with the Pixie Patch “sun” fabric, and then she may bind it with the red dot-squiggle fabric or the big FF daisy.  We can’t wait to see what she settles on!

We had a lot of fun looking at it. It’s just toooo cute, and is really going to make a wonderful “heirloom” gift for her new granddaughter.  Thanks Marie,  for showing it to us!  :)

Roxana’s “Essential Sudoku” Quilt

A couple weeks ago we got an order for one of our new Essence Fat Quarter Collections, from a very nice lady named Roxana, who lives in New Mexico.  We couldn’t wait to see what she was going to do with these great Karen Combs-designed fabrics.

Roxana's "Essential Sudoku" Quilt

Roxana's "Essential Sudoku" Quilt

This morning we got a really nice email from Roxana, along with a picture of her finished quilt top, and it is really stunning!  Roxana writes; ”

Dear Don and Cindy:
Well, here is what I did with the Essence fabrics.  It is a wall hanging, will finish 40 x 40.  The pattern is called Quilter’s Sudoku, and is by Eleanor Pickard.  I’ve named my wallhanging Essential Sudoku!  This is just the top, finished a couple minutes ago.  Please don’t think the distortions from my design wall are in the quilt, it is perfectly square and was so much fun to make, and I just love these fabrics.  I only used 9, so I have a goodly amount left.
There is a certain quilter’s serendipity to this, as you know we quilters have to keep our minds totally free for ideas that keep popping it.  I was looking through my 3-ring binder of ideas when I came across this pattern, I’ve had it for a few years and always wanted to make it.  Well, a couple hours later I was Fabshophopping and came across your site, with the Blank Essence fabrics highlighted!  I knew immediately this would be perfect for me, so here it is.  I’ll try to finish it this afternoon and I have a perfect spot in my living room to hang it!
Thanks again!
Roxana — New Mexico

Serendipity indeed!  It’s always wonderful when a really neat idea or pattern comes together with a great set of fabrics to show it off,  and this is a perfect example of how you can have ideas floating around until you connect them with just the right fabrics.  Of course, it really helps to be organized, like Roxana is, so you can take advantage of them when the time comes.

We saw this picture this morning, and the first thing I said was Wow!  The squares of the Essence fabrics look like jewels.  I know it’s a Sudoku puzzle, but it also reminds me of the computer game “Bejeweled.”

Thanks for sharing your beautiful new quilt with us, Roxana!  We’re sure it’s going to look great on your wall!

Marta’s Celtic Wall-hanging

Wow!  That’s all we could say when we first saw what our friend Marta did with her Celtic Illuminations fabrics.   She combined the various fabrics with a basic black blender and came up with a design that is just stunning.

Marta and her new Celtic Wall Hanging

Marta and her new Celtic Wall Hanging

Playing off of the triangle shapes in the main pattern, she placed diagonal patterns around the outside borders, use the small triangular knot pattern and small diamonds  around the main panel. She also showcases the different Celtic knot patterns by  arranging them around the main panel.

Very very nice, Marta.  You’ll be proud to have that one hanging on your wall!

Cindy sez…

Marta took up quilting a few years ago and as you can tell,  has a wonderful sense of color and design.  As many of us do, she fell in love with the fabric and purchased it without a clear idea or design in mind.

I think she came up with a keeper… thanks, Marta,  for sharing it with us and our customers!

Ginger The Stripping Queen

Ginger and her new strip quilt

The Stripping Queen and her new quilt

One of our bestest quilting friends here in the valley is Ginger.  She is a really talented quilter and has designed and quilted some of the most amazing quilts we’ve seen.

Lately, Ginger has been into strip quilting, so we’ve taken to calling her the Queen of Stripping.  A couple of weeks ago she purchased a butterscotch Bali Pop and some companion fabrics from us, the same ones used in the Tradewinds kit we have on our website.  We couldn’t wait to see what she’d come up with.

Well, today she brought over the finished top, and is it ever

Block and borders closeup

beautiful!  Pictures can’t do it justice, but we took a few anyway.   The materials she used in the quilt were the same Hoffman fabrics as in the Tradewinds quilt, i.e. the Butterscotch Bali Pop, the Autumn batik F2009/66, the 1895/205 Latte, and she added a thin border of the 1895/60 Hunter green.   She did take the basic pattern out of a book, which we’re going to be carrying soon on our website, as soon as we find out from Ginger which book it was.

Needless to say, Ginger’s version of this quilt is a lot more outstanding than the sample in the book will

be.  We can  say this knowing Ginger’s work and not having seen the book yet.  :-)    One of the things we really like about this quilt is that no two blocks are alike in it.  That takes a lot of work!

Attached here are some pictures of the quilt that I took when she brought it over today.  I tried to take a wide shot and a few closeups of some of the blocks and the borders.  You can click on the pictures to make them full size (800 x 600).

Really nice, Ginger!  You are indeed the Stripping Queen! Thanks for sharing your quilt with us!

Update: We found out that Ginger used the “State of Grace” pattern from the book “Strip Clubbing” by Cozy Quilts.  We now have that book in stock in our web store. Click here to see it.

Anna’s Purses

Filed under: Friends' Projects — Don @ 7:06 pm

A while ago, we received an order from a new customer named Anna.  It was a bit of an unusual order in that she ordered a bunch of our Bag e Bottoms lexan purse bottoms.  In fact, she cleaned us out of them!

Anna and Ricardo, after a cycle ride.

After a bit of correspondence with her, we discovered that Anna makes a lot of purses for her friends, and sometimes to sell in craft shows.

And, she sent us a link to a photoshow of her latest purse project which uses some really neat geometric fabrics for the outside and some nice blue batiks on the inside.  In fact, we liked her purses so much that we started carrying her favorite pattern, the Veronica handbag, on our website. Here’s a link to Anna’s Blog, where she is showing some of the purses and other projects she’s made.

Anna’s Project Blog

Anna and her husband Ricardo are motorcycle riders like we are. They enjoy riding around on their Harley Davidson motorcycle together and with friends.  They live in the Chicago area.  Anna also likes to travel, and she has done quite a bit of it. She is originally from Croatia and enjoys going back there to visit friends and family.

Very crafty, Anna!   Thanks for sharing your pictures with us!

Santa’s Stocking a Hit with the Designer!

The other day, we got a real nice note, and a nice blog mention, from Elaine Waldschmitt of The Quilted Closet.  Elain has designed a lot of great patterns, and we sell a couple of them.  Our Santa’s Best Christmas Stocking kit uses Elaine’s pattern and also includes a special instruction sheet that Cindy wrote on how to make the center block shown in our kit.

Anyway, Elaine really liked our interpretation of her pattern, and she’s done a nice post on it on her blog, which you can see at www.thequiltedcloset.wordpress.com.   You can see all of Elaine’s patterns at www.thequiltedcloset.com.  She has some really neat designs for clothing and accessories as well as quilts and other projects.  You can click on the links above to give her a visit!

Thanks, Elaine!
